    John Taye received a BFA at the University of Utah and an MFA at Otis Art Institute of Los Angeles County. He is a Professor Emeritus at Boise State University where he taught for 33 years. Taye taught a variety of drawing, painting and sculpture courses there, and workshops at numerous other schools.

    Taye has had over two dozen solo exhibitions throughout the West, and he has shown in many invitational and juried exhibitions throughout the country. His work has been shown at the Newport Visual Arts Center, Coos Bay Art Museum, Maryhill Museum of Art, Boise Art Museum, Herritt Art Museum, Salt Lake Art Center, Springville Art Museum, Kimball Art Center, Bountiful Art Center, Museum of Church History and Art, Tempe Arts Center, Mesa Cultural Center, Tacoma Art Museum, and the Oklahoma Art Center. University galleries that have exhibited his work include: Boise State University, Idaho State University, College of Idaho, Northwest Nazarene University, College of Southern Idaho, Utah State University, University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Southern Utah University, and California State Los Angeles. Taye is a Fellow in the National Sculpture Society, New York City, and has exhibited his work there in numerous shows since 1989.

    Taye’s artwork has been featured in several publications, including American Artist, Drawing, Sculpture Review and Fine Woodworking. He has received awards in exhibitions of the National Sculpture Society, Salt Lake Art Center, Springville Art Museum, Museum of Church History and Art, and the Degas Pastel Society. His work is in many private and public collections regionally.

    Taye draws on classical traditions from the late 19th and early 20th century in both his paintings and sculpture. The mood of his work is peaceful and reflective. His paintings explore the subtle harmonies of color found in the human figure and in the natural forms of his still lifes. In all of his work he tries to emphasize a positive, affirmative view of life, and an appreciation for the intricacies and beauties of the natural world.

  • Nick Jaina at The Modern

    Last summer, Nick Jaina and his band (Portland) strolled through Idaho, playing the Modern Hotel and Bar multiple times. The band’s street style performance and seemingly upbeat yet somewhat sinister rhythms, fit right in here at the Modern. With an electric guitar, steel guitar, vibraphone, clarinets, trumpets, an upright bass, violin and precession, Jaina’s band achieves a folksy almost burlesque sound. This April Nick’s band will be back for more, playing in the Modern Bar, April 23rd. So grab a re-fashioned, order a prosciutto and bri panini, sit back and relax all wile listening to one of Portland’s most admired bands.

  • Modern Cuisine at the Modern Hotel Boise, ID

    (BOISE, Idaho) – 2009 – The Modern Hotel and Bar, located in Downtown Boise’s Linen District, celebrates the Grand Opening of the Modern Kitchen on April 3 at 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Remi Courcenet, food and beverage manager, will present the new Modern fare, offering hotel guests and locals the Treasure Valley’s best in seasonal food. The Modern promises this won’t be your typical bar food. Menu items will range from healthy and fresh to sophisticated – and decadent. There is something for everyone, fig and goat cheese tartines, warm paninis, fresh salads, imported cheeses, and tempting tiramisu or chocolate mousse.

    In the spirit of green living, Courcenet will draw from local farmers and vendors, focusing on fresh ingredients that will change with each season. The menu is complemented by an outstanding seasonal wine list and cocktail menu. Modern staff can suggest the best accompaniment to your evening meal, whether it is a shaken martini, a smooth red wine, or great regional beer. With the addition of food, the Modern hopes to make our great bar better.

    Menu prices are reasonable, ranging from $4 to $14. We respect the times we live in and want to offer a quality product for a reasonable price. There is no reason food can’t be tasty, inexpensive, sophisticated, and fun.

It was first presented in the same room that it was shot in, making the audience a participant in the finished project.” says Trey McIntyre Project. Both the film and the dance group joined us for Modern Art 2008. We are looking forward to having the project back for Modern Art 2009.

  • The Modern Hotel Opens in Downtown Boise

    Hotel features sleek, modern design, high-end amenities and a rich history

    BOISE, Idaho (21 June 2007) — The Modern Hotel, Boise’s modern design hotel, opened in Boise’s Linen District today. The hotel’s 41 guest rooms and surrounding property bring together modern architecture, cutting-edge interior design, and top-of-the-line amenities while offering guests an intimate setting away from home.

    The Modern’s guest rooms feature Japanese soaking tubs, walk-in rainshowers, and floor-to-ceiling tiles in spacious bathrooms. Each room has a custom fabric headboard made locally in the Linen District, Nelson bubble lamps, and eclectic touches like the colorful Norwegian army blanket at the foot of each bed. No two rooms are exactly alike. Each boasts its own unique color scheme from chartreuse green to earthy browns. Guest rooms also feature 32-inch flat screen, high-definition TVs, wireless Internet access, iPod docking stations, and Aveda brand hair and bath products.

    The Modern was designed with a new generation of travelers in mind, according to David Hale, co-founder of the hotel and owner of Hale Development. “Business and leisure travel are no longer just about a place to stay,” Hale said. “Travelers are weary of forgettable, cookie-cutter rooms with no style or personality. With our unique, highly-designed yet comfortable hotel, we aim to provide guests with an unforgettable experience every time.”

    The Modern’s forward-looking style is built upon a rich historical foundation. The downtown Boise building, originally a mid-century TravelLodge, has undergone a $2.5 million renovation. The original Modern Hotel was opened not in Boise, but in neighboring Nampa in 1934 by Juan and Regina Bastida for local Basque sheepherders.

    Elizabeth Tullis, co-owner of the Modern Hotel and granddaughter of The Modern’s original founders explained, “we have created an aesthetic that combines the hotel’s colorful history with today’s notions of cutting-edge style and comfort. The result is a hotel that blends modern design with a relaxed atmosphere.”

    In addition to chic accommodations, the Modern Hotel has a landscaped interior courtyard where continental breakfast is served around stone-fire pits. The bar and lounge feature a modern design with a curved walnut bar and Cherner chairs. The lounge offers fresh-squeezed juices, fine wines, and an international beer selection.

    The Linen Building Event Center, located next door to the Modern Hotel, offers private meeting rooms and larger spaces for weddings and special occasions.

    The Modern Hotel offers a 24-hour business center, a non-smoking environment, and wireless Internet access throughout the hotel. The Modern Bar is open from 5 to 11 pm daily.

    The hotel is a short walk from Boise’s downtown core and within steps of other Linen District businesses, including outdoor dining and espresso cafes, and Boise’s Visual Arts Collective.

    A ribbon-cutting and grand opening for the Modern Hotel took place Friday afternoon and was attended by Boise Mayor David H. Bieter and several prominent Boise business leaders.
