It’s Ladies Night/Dance Music Night with the Vinyl Preservation Society of Idaho!

The Vinyl Preservation Society of Idaho will hold its May meeting from 7 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at the Modern Hotel and Bar (1314 Grove St.) in downtown Boise’s Linen District. The meeting is free and open to the public (21 and older please). Bring your records!

The theme for the evening is Ladies Night/Dance Music Night. Fellas, if you have a special lady in your life, bring her to the meeting; if you are a special lady, this night is for you. Members and guests are encouraged to bring their favorite dance music to share with the group. What qualifies as dance music? Anything you like dancing to – funk, techno, sock-hop rock, whatever. Bring it with you and don’t forget your dancing shoes.

Joining VPS at the Modern will be members of the Boise dance troupe the Trey McIntyre Project, who will be celebrating the unveiling of TMP-themed drinks created by Modern bartender extraordinaire Michael Bowers. Earlier this year, TMP asked 12 Boise artists to interpret the members of the company in their chosen medium in the form of “portraits” for the “9+1″ project. In Bowe
rs’ case, that meant creating dancer-inspired drinks that will debut at the Modern bar the night of our meeting.

  • Classic Cocktails by the Modern Hotel

    May 18th, 2009 by webAdmin

Our new summer cocktail menu is one to note. Featuring a comprehensive wine selection, Original Cocktails (like the new TMP cocktail), great new beers and interesting classics.

Our three featured classic cocktails are full of rich history. Such as the Ramos Gin Fizz (circa 1888), which was invented by Henry Ramos and his Imperial Cabinet Saloon. This eponymous fizz became one of the most beloved of all New Orleans cocktails. Served only in his bars, Ramos kept the recipe closely guarded until Prohibition rendered his trade secret useless. Consisting of gin, lemon and lime juice, sugar, orange flower water, egg white, cream and fizz, the drink in not concocted by the weak. Taking almost five minutes of shaking, historically Ramos would hire a line of “shaker boys” who would shake the cocktail then pass it down the line, once it arrived to the end of the line the cocktail was ready to serve. Known for it’s fluffy, rich texture, the Ramos Gin Fizz is an ideal leisure cocktail.

Besides the Ramos Gin Fizz, the Cameron’s Kick and the Bijou Cocktail have also made it onto the new Summer Menu. The Cameron’s Kick is an Irish Whiskey & Blended Scotch cocktail, dating back to the late 1920′s. Little is know of the origins of this drink. We don’t know who created it or what inspired the unlikely combination. We do know that it was recorded in two separate London cocktail manuals printed around 1930. A sour-type cocktail using some unusual ingredients such as Orgeat, makes the Cameron’s Kick a perfectly blended, engrossing and easy to drink cocktail.

The Bijou is a cocktail almost lost to prohibition and the cruel indiscriminance of memory, nut more than deserving of revival. Constructed from an herbal liquor, and herbal liqueur and herb-infused wine, it is an immensely complex tipple , that begs to be savored and contemplated. the Bijou Cocktail is a Gin based drink with Chartreuse, sweet vermouth, orange bitters, lemon twist. Up, olive optional.

  • AreCity at Modern Art 2009

Nothing could possibly allow us to know ourselves better, than our alter ego… Except maybe photographs of them?

Wherever you may be, a concert, a political event or even an art opening, AreCity will most likely be there. This citizen, journalist led group is studying and documenting culture, while expanding an understanding of life as we know it. May 7th (Modern Art 2009), AreCity took over room 222, inviting spectators to be the subject of a comical, yet charming series of photographs (very Wes Anderson).

Between 5:00pm and 9:30pm, the room became a beacon for modern technology, with filmed live streaming, twitter updates and hundreds of photographs. This post-modern approach to documenting, communicating and fun is just what Modern Art is about!

  • Modern Art at the Modern Hotel Only one night!

    May 5th, 2009 by Michal

Modern Art at the Modern Hotel

    Only one night!

    May 7, 2009 from 5:00 pm to 9:30 pm

(Free and open to the public)

BOISE, Idaho – On May 7, 2009, over 2,500 guests are expected to attend the Modern Art exhibit at the Modern Hotel. The event, which starts at 5:00 pm, will feature over 65 performing and visual artists from Idaho and the Northwest. The annual Modern Art event represents a creative approach to designing an artistic display. Both the venue (each artist displays their work in an individual hotel room, allowing guests to tour the hotel and enter 35 separate galleries) and the wide swath of artistic mediums (from photography to spoken word to painting to dance) make this event unique. Additionally, the hotel’s exterior will feature performances from local musicians and dancers.

Last year’s first annual Modern Art Event was a wildly successful event which has inspired more rooms, more creativity and more fun in 2009. Expanding the number of available rooms from 20 to 35, artists booked early and some have decided to collaborate. Take room 226, where Amy O’Brien and Kerry Tullis will transform the space into a studio setting, in which to stage award winning Idaho artist Kerry Moosman’s specific style of pottery building. In elevating his process to a set piece and performance that happens within the arc of the evening, they hope to illuminate this art forms natural intrinsic value as well as showcase this specific artist at work.

The amount of rooms utilized in this year’s Modern Art Event wasn’t enough to contain the talent and creativity of our arts community, so we’ve moved some artists onto balconies and into alternative spaces, including the Lunch Ladies in the brand new Modern Kitchen. E.J. Pettinger, the 2006 winner of the Alt Weekly Award for Cartoonists, will create a respite from your art travels, inviting you into his room for some Mild Abandon. Look to a balcony for photographer Jonathan Sadler, who will undoubtedly create a project as interactive and fun as his last year’s session which he has compiled into the book “In Bed”. Definitely keep your head up for a glimpse of visual artist Lisa Pisano’s installation which is based on Hayao Miyazaki’s animation in “My Neighbor Totoro” in the 2nd floor clearstory. And don’t miss poet Adrian Kien, who will move his office from his artist in residency program studio at 8th Street Marketplace to a cozy corner of the Modern, for spontaneous poetry on demand.

This is just a sampling of some of the incredible and exciting work happening at Modern Art 2009 at The Modern Hotel. “It’s thrilling for us to see so many hands and minds creating in one place.” Modern Hotel owner Elizabeth Tullis said. “We are happy to provide a venue for these talented artists to be seen.”

As Charles Gill, 2006 winner of the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and Modern Art participant, said about last year’s Modern Art, “The only thing I didn’t like about the event is that I didn’t get to make it to all the rooms!”
