• The First In-Room Film Festival: 39 Rooms

The First In-Room Film Festival: 39 Rooms
Boise, Idaho – February 20, 2015 – The Modern Hotel and Bar present the first in-room film festival.
The Modern Hotel and Bar has recently launched what is possibly the first “in-room” film festival.

Over the past year and a half the Modern has–with the help of Laura Mehlaff from Sun Valley Film Festival–acquired these films, through an open competition, for our own in-room film festival. Over 150 film submissions were received from throughout the world. They came from Idaho but they also came from Spain, the Russian Federation and even Tajikistan.

Now guests can watch short films specifically selected for the festival on the Modern Hotel‘s own Channel 39. They will even be able to vote for their favorite films, which will be awarded the honor of Guest’s Favorite Award.

Here are the selections for this year’s first international round of the festival:
    • Retire for the Evening, Written and Directed by Ed Hellmanilm
    • Sheltered Love, by Alex Italics, Director; Co-Producer
    • Juba-lation, Filmed and Edited by Andy Lawless
    • ZIMA by Cristina Picchi
    • Cities and Memories, by Yuqi Kang, Poetry by Italo Calvino
    • BEAST, by Brock Forrette
    • One Thing to Take, directed and animated by Bill Pettitt, story by Christian Winn
    • August, Director/Producer: Michael Moody Culpepper,
    • Baby Crazy by Haroula Rose, Writer/Director

Several of the films are world premieres, while others have been previously selected by other festivals. Baby Crazy premiered at the Sun Valley Film Festival last year and Zima was selected by Sundance. Either way we think these films are worthy of another audience. The 39 Rooms Film Festival is another way the Modern Hotel supports the Arts: by encouraging filmmakers and providing another venue to show their work.

This July we are accepting submissions for films about the Basque Country and culture. We will show them in the rooms during Jaialdi in July.

  • Treefort 2014

    January 17th, 2014 by webAdmin

Again this year we are blessed with the Treefort Music Festival. Great bands migrate north from the warmth of Austin, Texas and will breeze into town to warm up our city March 20-24.
If you didn’t go last year, I’ll offer some words of wisdom–or what I’m proclaiming to be wisdom. Go to Treefort, indulge yourself. Attending Treefort is like being the first one down the mountain after a fresh snowfall. It’s like being the first water skier on a glassy lake, carving beautiful rooster tails. It is primo. The indie music festival South by Southwest is an aging monster, now in its twenty seventh year. Boise’s own Treefort is your chance to catch a festival in its youth. My advice: be at Treefort when it’s young, instead of looking back and wishing you were there at the beginning. The Modern Hotel still has a few rooms in the belly of the beast, the heart of the action, the hub, baby! Call the Modern Hotel for details.

39 Rooms Film Festival Call for Short Film Entries

Idaho, November 25, 2013 – The Modern Hotel in conjunction with the Sun Valley Film Festival, is pleased to issue a Call For Entries to filmmakers for our First Annual 39 Rooms Film Exhibition.

The exhibition gives filmmakers the opportunity to exhibit their films in each of the 39 rooms of the Modern Hotel for up to a year. The short film program will run on a continuous loop on a dedicated channel in each of the 39 rooms.

In the spirit of other annual events like Modern Art, Treefort and the Modern Courtyard Music Series, 39 Rooms expands our mission to provide a creative venue for artists, musicians and filmmakers. 39 Rooms exhibition encourages artists to show their work, offering greater exposure for filmmakers in a public sphere.

Hotel guests can enjoy the films at their leisure when staying at the Hotel. Interested guests can comment on the films, choose their favorites and contact the filmmakers for copies. The Modern Hotel will inform our guests about the films playing in the rooms and provide information on the films and filmmakers.

Submissions are open now through November 2014. Guidelines and further information can be found online at

  • letter from room 235

    July 19th, 2012 by webAdmin

    hi there,

i am writing from room 235 where i just returned after a very lovely dinner and concert on the patio. i am just so in love with everything about your fine hotel that i HAD to write, right now, and tell you all.
when we told friends we were traveling to boise to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary they laughed at us…literally. we wanted a get away that required a plane ride, wasn’t too far, was affordable, offered a city feel with good restaurants and some live music, and was hot. we also wanted hip accomodations. with college tuition payments for our kids we were working with a budget. and i wanted to be someplace where i knew literally  no one. still…they all laughed.
when we looked online for accomodations we fell in love with you all via your website, replete with staff bios, history, and menus. the fact that you included a bio for your housekeeping manager/staff endeared me to you immensely!! i, in particular, couldn’t wait to arrive. i love midcentury modern design and also am committed to supporting local small businesses when i have the choice. we booked late so only had a choice of a small room which my husband tried several times to upgrade but you guys are just so popular no one ever cancelled.
i cannot tell you how thrilled we are with exactly where we are. we keep trying to want to go try other restaurants but can’t seem to leave. everything we eat here, from the fresh squeezed orange juice this morning, to the afternoon nut snack, to our dinners is amazing and feels as though it is prepared with utmost care and attention to detail. it was especially wonderful to have the days’ specials described to us by the chef…in our room!! michal and polly have provided great help and recommendations, and our server at dinner tonight (cowboy boots, pony tails, and round glasses…so bummed not to have gotten her name) was spectacular. our room couldn’t be more comfortable and so fun to be right over the patio.
our son is working retail this summer and it’s reminding us how difficult it can be, at times, to work in service and customer focused industries. i’m sure that’s true at times for you all. given that, i didn’t want to wait to thank you so much for providing us with a really fun and relaxing together time. these are rare for us and your fine hotel will forever be associated with wonderful, fun, happy, and warm (literally and figuratively) memories for us!
thank you, thank you, thank you! a million times…thank you!!
